A Magickal Autumn Garden
Summer is evolving into Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. It is almost harvest time and the moon is new. Twinkling lights flutter over the garden wall. It’s the faerie folk come to celebrate the season.
This is a garden for a small space. The apple tree is Espalier (horticultural and ancient agricultural practice of controlling woody plant growth by pruning and tying branches so that they grow in relatively flat planes, frequently in formal patterns, against a structure such as a wall, fence, or trellis).
Some Plant Lore from left to right with some of their magickal uses:
The Apple is ruled by Venus and the element of water. It is a symbol of immortality and knowledge; used in love and healing spells.
Rosemary is ruled by the sun and element of fire. It used to purify and cleanse, and to rid a place of negativity. Some say it is grown to attract elves.
Mint is ruled by Mercury and the element of air. It used in healing potions, travel and prosperity spells and to call good spirits.
Vervain is ruled by Venus and the element of earth. It is a common element in love mixtures and protective spells, as well as prosperity spells.
Lavender is ruled by Mercury and the element of air. It used in love spells and sachets, to induce sleep and rest and to dispel depression.
Thistle is ruled by Mars and the element of fire. It is used to promote strength and energy, used in healing spells and to drive away melancholy.
Yarrow is ruled by Venus and the element of water. It is used in love spells and to improve psychic powers and to dispel negativity.
Violet is ruled by Venus and the element of water. It is used in protection spells and to bring changes in luck, love and fortune.
All of the above are Old World Plants. The Pumpkin, native to North America, is carved into jack-o-lanterns to ward off demons.
A Small Magickal Garden Art Print is available on magickmermaid.com in two sizes.
Well well well – I learned about espalier. I’ve never heard of it before but now you mention it I’m sure I’ve seen this somewhere.
I have always loved lavender.
Thistles are prickly and I don;t like them much.
I didn’t even now violet was a thing! I thought it was just a colour.
This post was super duper interesting and packed with educational plant gems.
Now if you’ll excuse me I’m just off to take my daily yarrow barth.

p.s. sorry I forgot to say … I love the painting – loads of stuff packed in that I didn’t notice until you explained it all. I like the finish on the pumpkins.

Thank you so much, Sir Doubtpuppet! Espalier is popular in areas where space is scarce. Plant lore is fun to investigate. 🙂

A painting worth more than a thousand words. Loved the in depth symbology and am surprised at some of the cross culture similarities.

Thank you so much! It’s always fascinating when finding the same or similar lore applies to cultures all over the world. We are more alike than we are different. 🙂

I’ve seen espalier in formal gardens and always found it interesting. Enjoyed the details on the various flowers and herbs, and their ruling planets and signs. Beautiful art, as always.

Thank you so much, Russell! I’ve seen espalier as well; the flowers and fruits are regular size yet the trees are so small.
